In March, NOAA released the 2023 Fisheries of the United States report with data on U.S. fisheries, aquaculture, seafood trade, and consumption.

U.S. Seafood Consumption

In 2023, the per capita consumption of seafood in the United States was 19.1 pounds. The report found that in 2023, 80 percent of the seafood consumed by Americans came from foreign imports.

Wild Caught Seafood

In 2023, the top commercial species groups or species by catch value included:

  • crabs
  • lobsters
  • Alaska pollock
  • salmon
  • sea scallops

Marine Aquaculture Species

Shellfish species remain a cornerstone of U.S. marine aquaculture production. In 2023, the leading farmed species groups or species included:

  • oysters
  • clams
  • Atlantic salmon
  • red drum
  • shrimp
