EmailQuesadillas are a popular way to serve shrimp and other seafood. A wide range of recipes are available, utilizing ingredients such cheeses, peppers, tomatoes and others. Shrimp quesadillas are simple to prepare, require few ingredients and are loved by diners. They are very versatile and their flavor can be modified by substituting or adding ingredients.
Ingredients
Depending on recipe variations or local preferences, quesadillas may contain additions such as avocado, cilantro, onion, peppers, tomatoes, sea salt, sauces or other additions.
A key ingredient of shrimp quesadillas is cheese. There are several types that work well most recipes, allowing the cook to customize their creations and substitute when necessary. The classic quesadilla recipe contains Mexican style "melting cheese", although Monterey jack, cheddar, American and other type are also good choices.
Types of Tortillas
Tortillas are thin, round, flat, unleavened bread made from corn or flour. Corn tortillas are usually 6 inches in diameter and are packaged as partially-cooked products. Flour tortillas were introduced into Mexican culture when wheat flour was introduced by the Spanish. Flour tortillas have slightly more calories than corn versions, but are better suited for making quesadillas. Flour tortillas are usually 11-14 inches in diameter and come in a variety of thicknesses.
Shrimp Quesadillas Recipe
Ingredients
4 flour tortillas
8 oz. steamed or boiled shrimp (peeled)
8 oz. cheese (Mexican melting cheese, Monterey jack, cheddar or American)
butter or olive oil
2 jalapeņo peppers or 1 avocado (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
1. Split cooked shrimp lengthwise and devein if necessary. Slice cheese and any optional ingredients into small thin pieces.
2. Heat a skillet, adding just enough butter or olive oil to prevent tortillas from sticking.
3. In the heated skillet, add 1 tortilla, then position shrimp, cheese, (optional) peppers or avocado slices and sprinkle with chopped cilantro. Cover with second tortilla.
4. Cook until bottom tortilla begins to brown. Carefully flip and brown remaining side.
5. Remove from pan and cut into 4 sections. Serve immediately.
Like most other seafood dishes, the success of the meal depends greatly on the quality and freshness of the basic ingredients.
