In 2009, exports of Norwegian Salmon up to the end of the third quarter totalled NOK 16.7 billion. This is the highest export value ever recorded for the nine-month period to end-September. Compared to the same period last year, the increase in the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon is no less than NOK 4.1 billion.

"These record exports are the result of increases in both the price and volume of sales of Norwegian Salmon," says market analyst Paul Aandahl from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council. "This year to date, the average price of fresh Norwegian Salmon is NOK 31.85 per kilo. This is NOK 4.87 or 18% higher than in the same period last year. At the same time, the total volume of exports of Norwegian Salmon is up by 12% to 489,000 tonnes. This is a clear indication that demand for Norwegian Salmon is growing."

Norwegian Salmon exports to the USA have almost quadrupled in 2009. For the year to date, exports have increased by NOK 711 million to NOK 949 million. The increase in sales to the USA is attributable to growing demand for fresh and frozen Norwegian Salmon fillets. Consequently, the value of Norwegian Salmon fillet exports as a percentage share of total Norwegian Salmon exports has grown from 13% last year to 18 % this year.

The EU is Norway's most important market, accounting for 71% of Norwegian Salmon exports. This year to date, exports of Norwegian Salmon to the EU have increased in value by 27% to NOK 11.8 billion and in volume by 9% to 355,000 tonnes. The most important export markets in the EU are France, Poland and Denmark.

The value of exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout this year to date totals NOK 1.4 billion. This is NOK 172 million or 14% higher than in the same period last year. Export volume in the same period is down by 16% to 44,000 tonnes. Russia is the most important market for Norwegian Fjord Trout, accounting for 56% of the total export value. Other important markets for Norwegian Fjord Trout are Japan, Thailand and Taiwan.
