According to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council, 2010 data shows the highest export value ever recorded for Norwegian Salmon in February. Compared to the same month last year, the growth in value is 46% or NOK 636 million.

“The strength of Norwegian Salmon exports is due to a combination of increased demand and reduced competition in the world market for salmon,” explains market analyst Paul Aandahl from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

Volume and prices both showing growth

The total volume of Norwegian Salmon exports in February was up by 25% to 56,085 tonnes. At the same time, the price of fresh whole Norwegian Salmon increased by 19% to NOK 33.67 per kg, an increase of NOK 4.49 on the previous month.

Strong growth in value of exports to EU

Exports of Norwegian Salmon to the EU totalled NOK 1.3 billion in February, up by 27% compared to the same month last year. France is the biggest importer of Norwegian Salmon in the EU, with a total market value of NOK 273 million. Poland is the next biggest export market, with a value of NOK 240 million. Much of the Norwegian Salmon exported to Poland is further processed before being re-exported, primarily to other EU countries.

Exports to Russia more than doubled

Exports of Norwegian Salmon to Russia in February increased in value by 118% to NOK 181 million. Russia is Norway’s third biggest salmon market and exports to Russia in February accounted for about 9% of the total value of Norwegian Salmon exports.

USA is Norway’s fourth biggest salmon market

Norwegian Salmon exports to the USA in February increased in value by NOK 124 million. This is 238% up on the same month last year. The strongest growth was in fresh Norwegian Salmon fillets. The volume of exports increased from 448 tonnes in February last year to 1,948 tonnes in February this year. Frozen Norwegian Salmon fillets is also an important product segment on the US market, where the volume of exports increased from 300 tonnes in February last year to 771 tonnes in February this year.

Norwegian Fjord Trout exports decline

Exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout in February declined in value by 6% to NOK 141 million. The volume of exports was 3,866 tonnes, down 1,400 tonnes compared to the same month last year. The biggest market for Norwegian Fjord Trout is Russia, with an export value of NOK 76 million. This is 54% of the total export value of Norwegian Fjord Trout.
