NOAA has released its Fisheries of the United States - 2009. The report summarizes commercial and recreational fisheries of the United States. The report monitors landings from the U.S. territorial seas, the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and on the high seas.
According to the report:
Americans consumed 15.8 pounds of fish and shellfish per person in 2009, down slightly from 2008 figures.
Per capita consumption of fresh and frozen products was 11.8 pounds (finfish consumption was 6.2 pounds while shellfish consumption was 5.6 pounds)
Canned fishery products consumption was 3.7 pounds per capita.
Cured fish consumption was 0.3 pound per capita.
U.S. imports of edible seafood products amounted to 5.2 billion pounds valued at USD 13.1 billion in 2009.
U.S. exports of edible seafood products came to 2.5 billion pounds valued at USD 4 billion in 2009.
Imported seafood accounted for 84 percent of American seafood consumption.
