Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute recently announced the certification of wild Alaska Pacifc halibut. On April 29th, Alaska Pacific Halibut became the second of Alaska's major commercial fisheries to be awarded the independent, third-party FAO-Based Responsible Fisheries Management Certification.
Details on the certification can be found in the Final FAO-Based Responsible Fisheries Management Alaska Pacific Halibut Assessment and Certification Report (the full 240 page PDF is available, as well as a 13 page PDF summary document).
Alaska Salmon, was certified on March 11th, 2011. Certification of several other Alaska commercial fisheries (Black Cod, King and Snow Crab, and Alaska Pollock) is currently in progress.
Sustainability was written into the Alaska State Constitution in 1959, mandating that "fish...be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle." For more information on Alaska's long history of sustainability, visit http://sustainability.alaskaseafood.org/historical
