Norwegian Seafood exports in October totalled NOK 4.9 billion, up by NOK 35 million or just under 1% compared to October last year. This year to date, seafood exports total NOK 35.7 billion, an increase of NOK 4.9 billion or 16%, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

"The mackerel dispute between Norway and the EU is one of the reasons why the growth in seafood exports has eased in October," explains Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Export Council. "Disagreement over mackerel management measures has led to lower than expected catches of mackerel, which in turn has reduced the export value. Exports of Norwegian Salmon continue to show growth, which in October was sufficient to counter the reduction in exports of fish caught in the wild".

The value of Norwegian Salmon exports for October totalled NOK 2,2 billion, an increase of NOK 479 million. For the year to date, the value of Norwegian Salmon exports totals NOK 19 billion, up by NOK 4.6 billion on the same period last year. Exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout in October have fallen by NOK 30 million to a total value of NOK 169 million. This year to date, exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout total NOK 1.6 billion, an increase of NOK 141 million compared to the same period last year.

France and Poland are the biggest importers of Norwegian Salmon. Exports of Norwegian Salmon to the USA in October increased by 420% to a value of NOK 152 million, making the USA the 5th biggest market for Norwegian Salmon. The growth in Norwegian Salmon exports to the USA is accounted for by the demand for fresh and frozen fillets. The biggest import markets for Norwegian Fjord Trout are Russia and Japan.

In October, exports of herring fell by NOK 106 million to a total value of NOK 547 million. For the year to date, the value of herring exports totals NOK 2.9 billion, an increase of NOK 346 million. Exports of mackerel in October showed a steep decline of NOK 222 million to a total value of NOK 632 million. This year to date, exports of mackerel total NOK 1.7 billion, an increase of 15%.

So far this year, the biggest importers of mackerel from Norway are Russia and Ukraine. Exports of mackerel from Norway to Germany have increased by NOK 162 million or 157% to a total value of NOK 264 million. The biggest importers of mackerel from Norway are Japan and Russia.
More salted fish, less clipfish

In October, the value of exports of salted Norwegian Cod increased by 61% to NOK 99 million, while the volume of exports was up by 108% or 1,476 tonnes to a total of 2,843 tonnes. Exports of salted fish remain down by 5,800 tonnes compared to last year, when exports up to the end of October totalled 24,800 tonnes. Exports of Norwegian Cod clipfish fell in October by NOK 73 million. This was entirely due to lower prices, as export volumes remained steady.
