Coffee is a good choice to serve with seafoood, especially when wine is out of the question. The smooth taste of coffee can really add to the subtle taste of prawns, crab or squid, whether you have opted for a mixed platter of seafood or are just having one particular sort of `fruits de mer`, fruits of the sea, as the French would say.

If you crave baked seafood that is flavored with a lightness of touch, then the best coffee to go with this type of dish has to be fragrant and smooth with a taste that is as delicate as the seafood you are eating. This type of coffee is normally found growing in places of high altitude.

Coffee that has a smooth and smoky flavour with undertones of rich chocolate are also great accompaniments to seafood that has been oven baked and has a subtle flavor. You do not want to overpower the taste of the lobster, mussels or scallops you are eating with anything too strong.

Your best bet is to plump for coffee with those medium or mild tones, or even a sweeter flavor to bring out the lighter, more delicate taste of the seafood. If your dish has a spicy bent to it, you could strike out for something a bit more bold and go for a coffee that is more earthy with a smoky backdrop and an exotic depth to it.

At the end of the day (or night depending on when you are indulging) it is up to your taste buds and preferences as to what you will put with which food and drink. Try out different experiences and tastes to come up with the best solution for you.

At the end of a meal, you want to be satisfied that you have eaten well and enjoyed your food as much as you could. The faint tingle in your mouth will tell you what experiences you have had and whether you want to repeat them again or not.

But remember - just the aroma of roasting coffee beans is enough to make anyone want that rich cup of coffee in their hand, so add some prawns on to your plate and tuck in.
